Grading Policies

All work will be graded by the skill being assessed versus a standard Test, Quiz, and Homework model.  When assessing by skill, it provides a more accurate reflection of where students need improvement and where students excel.

This grading system mimics the four standards of English that students must master before they graduate from high school: reading, writing, language, and speaking & listening.

The Goal: This system allows students, parents, teachers, and administrators to clearly identify areas in which students struggle or excel.

For example, if a student has consistently poor grades in writing, there is now an opportunity to assist the student with resources, tutoring, and extra teacher attention to improve those specific skills.

Reading - 30%

The reading category looks at the student's ability to understand a text and demonstrate knowledge of literary concepts.

Writing - 30%

The writing category looks at a student's ability to explain thoughts and opinions in a clear, logical manner through writing.

Speaking & Listening - 20%

The language category looks at a student's ability to understand common vocabulary, grammar, and how language is constructed.

Language - 20%

The speaking & listening category looks at a student's ability to explain thoughts and opinions in a clear, logical manner verbally.

Late/Missing Work

Work is expected to be submitted by the due date and time unless the student has been granted an extension, which they must ask for ahead of time.

LATE WORK

  • Receives half credit (50) if submitted outside tutoring hours.

  • Receives full credit if submitted during tutoring hours in my classroom.

DEADLINES

  • COLLEGE PREP STUDENTS: Late/Missing work can only be submitted during the month it was due. After the end of the month deadline, missing work will be PAST DUE and not accepted.

  • HONORS STUDENTS: Late/Missing work can only be submitted within one week of the due date. After the end of the week deadline, missing work will be PAST DUE and not accepted.

Academic Honesty

CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE AND WILL RESULT IN A ZERO WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

Cheating is defined as the following:

  • "Googling" the prompt for answers

  • Using an AI assistant, overview, tool, or program (ex: ChatGPT) to copy and paste, "inspire" you, or edit your work

  • Using a paraphrasing app, tool, or website to edit or revise your work

  • Using a grammar assistant to revise your work (note: Proofreading is fine where it is adjusting capitalization, misspelled words, or missing punctuation. If it is revising and changing whole sentences to "sound better," then it is cheating for academic work.)

  • Copying or "sharing" work with classmates

  • Not using citations for outside sources

Make sure your work is your own; take ownership of your learning.

In addition, I will not write college recommendations for any student involved in cheating.
